Ruin Or Renewal
Taking Charge of Stress in Brutal Times
What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?
-Ursula K. Le Guin
Good Morning!
The alarm clock drills its piercing racket into your brain. “No” screams your mind,
“Not yet!” You didn’t sleep too well — it just seems there’s so much going on, so
many problems buzzing around in your head. Grab a coffee, listen to the radio on the
way to work:
"Now to the economy: This week, consumer confidence plunged, the inflation rate
soared, foreclosures were up and home values fell sharply. In other news, there were
6 more terrorist attacks in the Middle East, and another 2000 square miles of the
arctic ice cap melted.
"Six people were shot to death in an upscale Los Angeles suburb by the father, a
laid-off accountant who killed his family, then turned the gun on himself. ”The
suspect alluded to having extreme financial difficulties,” said the police chief."
All you hear is ‘catastrophe,’ ‘crisis,’ ‘meltdown.’
And you’ve also got the day to day problems with work (if you have it, it may not be
secure) , marriage, kids and MONEY.
Extreme Weather can cut power for days or weeks, Disease can spread like wildfire,
in Japan we’ve been reminded what Earthquakes and tsunamis can do. And maybe
If economies continue to deteriorate, we will have to contend with:
•
Deteriorating schools and infrastructure
•
Deteriorating neighbourhoods
•
Shortages of food and other essentials
•
The possibility of complete breakdown of society
If you’re feeling 'stressed-out', you're not alone! In 2008, eighty percent of people
said the economy is a major cause of stress. Total reported stress increased by
about 150%.
Do you have some of these symptoms?
Nervous, uptight, wound up. Worrying all the time, Tight Muscles , Feeling restless
or shaky
Headaches, Heart pounding, Trouble getting a deep breath , Upset stomach,
Tiredness
These are just some of the symptoms of anxiety, or 'stress'.
Stress can Kill you!
Uncertainty and instability may be more dangerous to our health than actual
catastrophes because there's not much we can actually DO. Worry may not kill you
instantly, but it's dangerous if it goes on and on.
Blood pressure rises, stress-hormone levels jump, and all diseases, including
depression, are worsened. Unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, and drug abuse
can escalate, because humans really hate anxiety and will do almost anything to
escape it. Depression is a special risk for men, who often keep feelings hidden. If our
self-worth depends on possessions, careers and status we're at risk for depression if
we lose them.
Almost all unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, chest pains and tiredness are
related in some way to stress and worry.
Stress is unavoidable, and it needs to be controlled: SO,
Put the right person in charge of stress: YOU!
