Nervous, uptight, wound up. Worrying all the time, Tight Muscles , Feeling restless or
shaky...
Headaches, Heart pounding, Trouble getting a deep breath , Upset stomach, Tiredness
.....
These are just some of the symptoms of anxiety, or 'stress'. If you’re a nurse and you’re
feeling stressed, you’re not alone. In these rapidly changing times, almost 70% of people
complain of stress symptoms. We each have our own concerns, but the work demands in
nursing are very heavy, both physically and mentally.
As a family physician I see every day the incredibly valuable work that nurses do.
The quality of life of nurses will be greatly increased if:
Their contribution is more recognised and valued
Their stresses are recognised and they are given the tools to thrive on them
Their medical education is continually beefed up so that they can become even
more valuable and contributing members of the health care team
SO,
Put the right person in charge of stress YOU!
You can never be without stress - it’s part of being alive. The main thing is not to get rid of
stress, but to make yourself equal to the things you face in life. You can harness the
energy of anxiety - use it to actually make yourself healthier, and to enjoy life far more.
You achieve balance at the level of stress that feels good to you - your OPTIMUM level -

picture of stress as a contest, or perhaps a 'battle'.

Review & Comments:
Here’s one review from Susan S. Phillips, RN, BSN, CNOR, Director of Surgical Services,
Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte NC. U.S.A.
Nursing is considered a high stress occupation. The premise of the book is that
stress is part of life, and the control of stress is the individuals choice.
The book is a simplified outline full of practical tips for those stressful areas in
which the individual has some control. It also gives examples of the 'big picture' in
which control is nebulous ......
The book has 17 short chapters. The first chapters are devoted to understanding
stress and its symptoms. The later chapters explain specific stress reduction
techniques .....The author gives practical hints on balancing one's life and on
getting help from supportive relationships.
The last chapters deal with the specific workplace stressors of change, patients,
shift work, co-workers and physicians. There is also a chapter about burnout,
symptoms and prevention.
The author has written realistically about the stresses of nursing, and he uses
humour and quotes from many resources. Reading this book has helped me
develop a personal plan to take charge of and thrive on the challenges I face.
More comments:
"Easy read";
"Wonderful use of humour to illustrate points";
"Loved illustrations";
"Emphasizes importance of nursing".
