The Stress Of Job Loss
THE STRESS OF JOB LOSS
Early morning.
You struggle to wake up. You feel terrible. You were awake half the night, but at last you
got just a few hours of restless, broken sleep.
Losing your job felt like a hammer blow, and although you were optimistic at first, the
depressing reality is that it seems impossible to find any job, let alone something even
half decent, and the longer it’s taking the more depressing and hopeless it feels.
Problems are piling up.
UNEMPLOYMENT!
For many people it’s a dreaded word. It means crisis, bankruptcy. hunger, loss of
freedom, loss of meaning and loss of status.
The worry about money is always right in front of your mind. How long will the savings
last? You have to keep the car so you can get out looking for work, but will you be able to
keep the house?
The marriage isn’t going well, your spouse seems to resent the fact that you’re still at
home, and you feel so down that it’s hard to get motivated to do much around the house;
and so much has happened in the last couple of years that you don’t even seem to be
able to talk about problems without fighting anymore. And you’re always worried about
the children, where they are and what they’ve been up to - they don’t seem to
understand how bad it is for you.
It seems as if life hasn’t been much fun for years now. The doctor says your blood
pressure is up and all those colds and coughs tell you you should quit smoking, but that’s
hard to do when you feel lousy.
When you finally get home from job-hunting, you’re dog tired, and no way do you want to
listen to everyone else’s problems—or do all the chores that are waiting.
The easiest thing to do is pour a stiff drink and lock yourself away in front of the T.V. But
you know the worrying will start again as soon as you try to sleep..........................
Losing your job and being unemployed adds a massive load of extra problems to the
stresses of modern life which everyone faces.
Stress has been described as “the epidemic of the ’90s” by the United Nations, and
when you read any newspaper, you’re bound to find at least one article on it.
Unemployment, or even the threat of it, gives a whole new meaning to the word ‘stress’,
and in a depressed economy, where jobs are few and far between, it’s known to be one
of the most devastating things that can happen to anyone.
The Ontario Medical Association estimated the bill for extra medical services as a result
of unemployment at one billion dollars! There’s an increase in people’s blood pressure
and in the rate of heart attacks; insomnia, fatigue and ulcers are all increased.
Unemployment can wreck a whole family’s life.
Long ago, people mostly lost their jobs because of poor performance. They didn’t work
hard enough, learn quick enough or care enough to keep them. And there was always
another job waiting out there.
Today, more and more companies, no matter how large or strong they seem, are
reorganizing, downsizing or closing entire plants. It’s not usually the worker’s fault.
Everyone reacts differently to losing their job. It may not seem as much of a problem if
you have other resources, such as a wife or husband who is still working. But it can be a
knockout blow if there are payments and debts, or your work was your whole purpose in
life.
